Fix for Ubuntu 8.04 64bit 4gig ram and fglrx driver using mttr

Posted by lazybit on September 2, 2008

I’ve seen I’m not the only one running a 64 bit Ubuntu Hardy and running into a problem starting Xorg with the fgrlx driver when using 3+ gig of ram.

My Xorg is running (without crashes so far) for a few days now, thanks to this fix at the ubuntu forum.

I’m using a script during startup that applies the patch and then starts kdm.

Here’s the fix (as seen in the ubuntu forum, link above):

# Fixup /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=2" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=1" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=3" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=4" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "disable=0" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0x00000000 size=0x80000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0x80000000 size=0x40000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0xC0000000 size=0x10000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0x100000000 size=0x20000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr
echo "base=0x120000000 size=0x10000000 type=write-back" >| /proc/mtrr

I’m using a ATI 3870, and a P35 chipset.

Posted by lazybit on July 13, 2008 fixed the tag cloud. Previously it would destroy the layout when tags become too long or big. Now it wraps around. You can use it again πŸ™‚

Thanks wordpress.

Flash 10 beta in Firefox 3 on Ubuntu 64 bit

Posted by lazybit on July 6, 2008

Yes, there is no native 64 bit version (again!) for us, but with the good old ndiswrapper and this tutorial you will get it to work.

Full screen view is now working. Everything else seems the same as in version 9.

As in the previous version, it seems amazingly hard on the cpu. And after watching some flash movies on you tube npviewer.bin was consuming a lot of cpu time, even though all flash pages have been closed.

This seems either to be a flash or a flash – ndiswrapper issue.

Because I wanted my cpu back I killed the processes, indirectly disabling flash for the current running firefox.

Again, this seems to be a working solution, but not the best one.

Or maybe flash 64 bit is on its way. Hm, maybe next decade.

If I find out more, I will let you know.

your blog on or your own host

Posted by lazybit on June 22, 2008

So you decided to blog with WordPress?

You’re probably just in for blogging, might have read one or two comparisons to other blogsystems? Drupal or Blogger?

Ok, you already made the decision, it’s going to be WordPress. But the questions is, use and put it all into the hands of WordPress or get your own url and do it yourself.

It’s not only a question if you have the technical capabilities. Setting up WordPress is fairly easy. And if you only have webspace and a database, the hoster takes care of everything else.

So I just give you my point of view, I had some experience with Drupal and WordPress on my own server and now this blog on takes a lot of decisions off you mind because you plainly don’t have too many options. One gets to choose between a few nice layouts and a limited set of plugins. But that’s actually enough for regular blogging. Also you don’t waste so much time playing around with the site or evaluation potential plugins, it has been taken care about already. I can live with that πŸ™‚

It is also very surprising that you will get indexed very fast and the amount of traffic I received after just a few posts was outnumbering the daily visits I had with 2 years of my old blog. Trackbacks and Pings help a lot, but also that the community accounts work on your site. Additionally its also easier to comment and leaving a fingerprint behind.

And the good point is, if you want to grow, it’s easy to migrate to your own site, taking all the data along. You have no costs and liabilities.

So if you’re new and want to try it out, or if you were always sceptic if you could live with these limitations, which I must say I was, there’s no reason for not giving it a shot.

ubuntu 8.04 hardy heron x86_64, firefox 3 and flash plugin

Posted by lazybit on June 4, 2008

I recently installed a fresh copy of Kubuntu 8.04 with KDE4. Quite nice I must say.

I always had trouble installing flash and firefox on my 64bit distros, but this time it was really painless.

sudo apt-get install nspluginwrapper flashplugin-nonfree lib32nss-mdns

That’s it. I tried gnash but it would not work. Hopefully in some future release.

Thank’s to Andy for providing a nice howto.

Update: Also read the post on Flash 10 if you’re interested

social bookmarking for blogs

Posted by lazybit on May 28, 2008

I recently found this nice button (see the bottom of the post) on a powered site. I thought that’s a nice and clean idea to allow to add the page to some web2.0 sites or, how oldschool, your bookmarks. Ok I guess thats only for people who don’t know how to bookmark. But I’ve heared there are still some out there.

So after a quick google search I found these pieces of information: how to get addthis button to work with and the GetSocial tool.

The short answer is, you will not get the AddThis button to work properly on your blog due to technical (I guess mostly because of safety concerns) limitations ( in what you’re allowed to do) without some manual editing. It will work, don’t worry.

Becuse I’m not a big fan of doing things manually over and over again this led me to the part where I stumpled upon GetSocial. This tool fixes this issue for you by conquering the problem off site. Ok basically you do all the work and it comes back with a string for you to paste in your blog where all the links are included. This turned out to be even more work. Also with the drawback of running a random .exe file on your pc which needs to be one with a .NET 2.0 framework. And it actually doesn’t work on all wordpress templates, so that you’ll end up with space in between the individual icons. No, not a solution either.

So the quick and dirty version is to manipulate the AddThis button manually to make it work. It’s described on shongjog. Basically it’s just setting the parameters according to the post to get a single blog entry committed. It taks about 30 seconds per blog entry, and that’s ok. At least for people like me who only blog every once in a while.

You just need to replace url and title with the appropriate values. Thats it. See below πŸ™‚

jazz is different

Posted by lazybit on May 24, 2008

It’s good to see that even the “best band in the world” has some trouble when performing live too.

It was my first time seeing Die Γ„rzte live, and I must say it was a very nice concert. They’re just pure fun.

Being not a major fan I was little disappointed that they played a few songs from the past I’ve never heard. Also I didn’t like it too much when Rod switched over to guitar and more metal like playing style. But that have been the only minor drawbacks of the conert.

They had fun on stage and it transfered to the audience pretty good. Ok it’s only their third gig on tour, but it was quite funny when Farin and Rod started out a song in two different tunes and Farin had to walk over to Rod to get things straightend out. At another song they switched to Steinberg headless guitar and bass, but Farins 6 string was so out ouf tune he had to switch back, after telling Bela to cover while he was trying to tune the guitar. And of course, the pulled some Sahni jokes.

So if you get the chance to see the tour, it’s worth the entry fee.

I moved, again – the page, not me :-p

Posted by lazybit on May 1, 2008

Ok, after my hopefully final experience with vServers I moved my blog again. But this was my ultimate move.

After a more or less usual update on my vServer hosting, the server it decided to not let me log in any more. The server was still up and running, and apache/mysql did response. After mailing support they said, there’s nothing they could do, because I changed the default configuration. And of course I’m not willing to pay 100 EUR/h to get it fixed or to reinstall again. Which also means losing all recent data.

So, I took my latest database backup and looked for alternatives. I’ve been running wordpress for while now, being a drupal user originally. So I decided to give another shot. And I must say, it does satisfy my needs. So blogging did move to this site, obviously πŸ™‚

As for my pictures, I decided to get a FlickrPro account. So if you want to browse them, go ahead.

So welcome again, to the new site πŸ™‚
